On the night of July 7, 1892, Andres Bonifacio, and a few other Filipinos secretly met in a house along Azcarraga Street. On that night, the Katipunan was formed. The members formalized their membership by signing the pact with their blood. In 1895, Bonifacio became the Supremo of the Katipunan.
On August 23, 1896, the katipuneros gathered secretly at a farm of Juan A. Ramos, at Pugadlawin in Kalookan. The Spanish had deciphered the secret Katipunan codes. The katipuneros were in great danger. They agreed to fight to the death.
"Bring out your cedulas and tear them to pieces to symbolize our determination to take up arms," Bonifacio instructed his members.
They shouted, "Long live the Philippines."
The cry at Pugadlawin signaled the start of the Philippine Revolution.
Bonafacio formed his own revolutionary government called the Republika ng Katagalugan (Tagalog Republic), with him as President and the members of the Katipunan high council as the cabinet for the new Philippines.
While Bonifacio's personal campaigns were not very successful, the revolutionaries in Cavite had greater success, led by officers coming from the upper class, including Emilio Aguinaldo. They sent out a manifesto forming a government of their own, disregarding Bonifacio's revolutionary government.
The new Aguinaldo government condemned Andres Bonifacio as a traitor to the Revolution and gave him the death penalty.
A group of Magdalo soldiers caught Bonifacio in the town, of Indang where Bonifacio was wounded and his brother Ciriaco killed.
Andres Bonafacio and his other brother, Procopio, were executed by firing squad on, May 10, 1897 at Mt. Nagpatong.
In doing so, the new Aguialdo government executed the Filipino who started the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule.
Philippine history remembers Andres Bonifacio on his birthday, Nov. 30, rather than the date of his death, May 10, 1897. Unlike Rizal who was executed by the Spanish, and other heroes who died in battle, Bonifacio was executed by fellow Filipinos loyal to the rival government.
Today Bonifacio Day is a day used by anti-government political and social groups to organize and demonstrate against the current Philippine government.
If Andres were to be alive today, and witnessed all the different groups and agendas that carry his image and shout his name, who would he approve of and support?
