Maidens Festival

Seven Sisters

August

Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Maidens (Seven Sisters) Festival

This is a festival for young girls and lovers, dating back 1500 years to an ancient Chinese legend about the youngest of the seven daughters of the Jade Emperor.

According to folklore, she married a cow herder and was ordered to Heaven to weave robes for the Gods. She was only permitted to return to earth to visit her husband once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh moon.

Unmarried young women make offerings of fruit to the lovers, burn joss sticks at Lover's Rock on Bowen Road in Wan Chai, and pray for a good husband.

Hungry Ghost Festival

August 19th

Hong Kong

The Hungry Ghost Festival

During the entire lunar month, the Chinese believe the gates of Hell are opened, freeing hungry ghosts that wander the earth in search of food.

In remembrance of the dead, families burn joss sticks and offer food to appease them, in order to prevent bad luck. Other tribute offerings are made in the form of burning colorful fake paper money ( Hell Notes) so the ghosts will have more cash to spend.

Hell Money for your Hungry Ghost

Hell Bank Note

In some cities, outdoor concerts take place at night so that the ghosts might be entertained.

15 days after the festival begins, it is believed the ghosts return to their homes, and the festival ends.

2008 Summer Olympics

August

Beijing, China

The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics had the opening ceremony on August the eight, 2008. This marked the most costly and most beautiful ceremony in Olympic History.

The showcase of the Beijing Games was the bird nest like skeletal structure of the 90,000 seat Stadium.

An estimated four million visitors traveled to Beijing for the Olympics. The 2008 Games Program was similar to the Athens 2004. The 2008 Olympics had the return of 28 sports and 302 events.

A Geneva based group has claimed that 1.5 million Beijing residents have been displaced from their homes for the Olympic Games. As of May 2005, 300,000 residents have been evicted from their homes in preparation for the Olympic construction. Beijing police have arrested many people protesting evictions.

The China Intelligence Services monitored the activities of suspected demonstrators with topic issues such as Tibet, Darfur, Myanmar and in Xingjian, Uyghar and Islamic Separatist.

Calls for boycotts of the Olympics came from these different protest and political interest groups.

After the Olympics the Chinese now have increased national spirit and more distain for foreign influence.

Nationwide China spent over 40 Billion Dollars on the Summer Games. The 2008 Olympics had over a million production volunteers. Over 4.7 Billion viewers worldwide watched the Beijing Games.

Even with all the political issues and the heartbreak of the Sichuan earthquake not far behind, The 2008 Beijing games was one of the great moments in Olympic history.

The Feast of Lanterns

Toro-Nagashi

August

Hiroshima, Japan

The Festival of Obon

The Buddhist festival of Obon is often named The Feast of Lanterns. According to tradition, this is the time of year when the souls of the dead return to the living world and visit their relatives.

Special offerings of food are made at temples and house altars, and at sunset lanterns are lit and hung in front of houses to guide the spirits home to their family.

In the evening the Bon-Odori, or special Obon dance, can be seen in local temples or shrine precincts. The dance is to comfort the ancestral spirits. Many people wear a Yukata (summer kimono) for this dance, which differ in styles from region to region.

The festival ends with the beautiful Toro-Nagashi (lantern-floating) ceremony. Colorful candle lit paper lanterns are floated down rivers or on the sea to guide the spirits safely back into their world.

After sunset on the 16th, five mountains around Kyoto are lit up with spectacular bonfires bidding farewell to the souls of ancestors. The bonfires have a variety of configurations, including kanji characters and a boat. The most spectacular is on Mount Daimonji—there, the bonfires spell out the shape of the kanji character pronounced "Dai" , which means "great."

In Hiroshima a Peace Festival is held each August 6th with events that coexist with the Obon Festivals. Lanterns float in the river representing the deaths from the American use of Atomic weapons.

On August 6, 1947 the first Peace Festival was held in an open area in Jisenji-no-hana, now called Peace Memorial Park. The festival took place around a wooden peace tower which was built for the occasion. After a silent prayer by the people present, the Peace Bell was rung. Then Mayor Hamai took the platform and read to the world the first Peace Declaration. Mayor Hamai expressed his convictions eloquently, speaking from his own experience as a hibakusha.

Hibakrusha translates literally from Japanese as "explosion-affected people." As of August 2011, there were 430,000 hibakusha certified by the Japanese government.

On the anniversaries of the bombings, lists of the names of hibakusha whose deaths have been recorded in the previous year are added to the cenothps in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As of August 2011, the death tolls are 275,230 (Hiroshima), and 155,546 (Nagasaki).

Today, from the paper cranes to the floating lanterns, this event, like modern day Japan, has morphed into a multifaceted festival with many different meanings.
